6 Methods to Finish Reading a Book

  Some people love to read. They can read and finish so many books. The books become their life. Yeah, that’s not me. I stare at a book, try to read a couple of pages, then get distracted. It doesn’t even need to be my phone that distracts me. It can be literally anything around me. And I’m sure I am not the only one who is like this. Many people have a hard time even finishing at least one book. Nowadays, our focus is so short we try to find things to distract us. This mainly happens because we get bored so easily.

  I’m sure you finding this means you know the importance of reading. Reading books is a way to self-educate ourselves. This mainly goes for nonfiction books. Some people think reading is not needed because in this day and age we can self-educate ourselves through watching videos and listening to podcasts. Yet there is something about reading books that watching videos or listening to podcasts can’t replace. I think these other things are like supplements to the main focus. It’s like watching The Lord of The Rings or Harry Potter. You love what you saw, but if you want to really understand everything then you got to read the books. So we know we got to read books, but how can we accomplish such a difficult task? Well, I will be giving you different ways of finally finishing that book you always wanted to finish. It’s in no particular order, but if you’re someone like me who gets bored easily, I suggest you should try to rotate with all of this because eventually, you will grow tired if you stick to only one method. (NOTE: None of these will work unless you give yourself a time to focus only on reading. Meaning you have to put everything that’ll distract you away from you.)

  1. Read from chapter to chapter.

  This is one of the most basic ways to do it, and I usually like to start off with this one. We know books are overwhelming, so to take in everything we usually like to break it into smaller pieces. Reading from chapter to chapter is a simple way to break it down. What I like to do if I’m reading a book with this method is that I would set a schedule of when I should read a chapter or two. Usually, for me, I like to read at least one chapter per day to make a habit of it. Reading a book this way can definitely speed up the process. However, there is an issue with this method and I’ll go over it in the second method.

2. Have a certain goal for pages to read.

  Like what I said earlier, the first method is good for some books. The only issue is that some books have chapters that run forever. I swear I remembered reading a book with a 20-page chapter, and then I found out I only read the introduction/prologue! Some of the chapters are even longer than that! So for instance, I make a goal of how many pages I’ll read. Yes doing this will make finishing the book take longer, but at least you made some progress.

3. Trick yourself in reading at a time limit.

  This is a fun one that I learned from an old teacher of mine. There would be a movie he would tell me to watch. Sometimes I don’t like the movies he watches. So what he will do is tell me this, “Just watch at least the first ten minutes of the movie.” I would do that, and next thing you know I finish the whole movie! Now you’re probably thinking, “Sam. Watching a movie and reading are two different things. Of course finishing a movie would be easier!” All I got to say is that you’re probably right, but hear me out. You can try to trick yourself into doing this. Check the time, then tell yourself you’ll read it for at least 5 minutes. Read for awhile, then check your time again. You suddenly realize that you’ve already passed the time! Now this may not work if you’re impatient, but then again none of these methods will work if you treat reading your book like an assignment more than something you’re really trying to focus on. Just remember your goal, push through, and learn from the book.

4. Do active reading.

  Now this takes reading to a whole other level. Active reading is basically taking good notes while you read. Personally, I only do this if it’s a book I really like. It allows me to take down all the important facts of the book, and allows me to understand more of the book than if I just read it. The good thing about this method is that you will grow to love the book you’re reading and see to it till the end. However, I don’t suggest using this as your first method because for new people this might be very intimidating. Reading a book you’re just trying to finish while taking good notes can feel like a lot of work, which can lead to a burnout and you ending up not finishing the book. This is really an advanced method for more intermediate/advanced readers, and should be taken seriously.

5. Try the Pomodoro Technique.

  For those of you who doesn’t know this, the Pomodoro Technique is having a certain goal you want to finish and give it 25 minute intervals of pure focus and concentration with short intervals. Originally, you give it 4 intervals of 25 minutes, then 3-5 minute breaks in between. After the fourth, if you need more intervals then you give yourself more 25 minute intervals with 10-30 minute breaks in between. This works for anything you’re trying to accomplish in life, but when it comes to reading I would try using this technique for more complicated books. I thought to share this for you to try out yourself.

6. Listen to the audiobook version while you’re reading.

  This is actually my favorite method. Audiobooks in general are really good because it allows you to do passive learning, meaning you can learn while you’re doing something else like driving to work or doing your laundry. The only problem I have with passive learning is that it’s PASSIVE. It’ll enter one ear and go out the other. So what I like to do is listen to the audiobook while I’m reading the actual book. It makes going through the book a lot easier. You can change the speed of how the reader is reading, skip to certain parts of the book you want to go over again, and much more. So these are the 6 methods to help you finally finish reading that book you always wanted to complete. Just remember that none of these methods will work if you don’t actually give your focus on completing the task. Remember why you are doing this, recall your goals, and seek to it to completion. Three Parts For a Whole You

 How can we begin to change ourselves for the better? What does it take to begin? When do I know I’m ready to even try? All those answers will eventually be answered. First we need the general knowledge in order for us to begin. The main thing is this, there are three parts of you that needs to be worked on in order to start the process of change. Those parts being the spirit, the mind, and the body.

The picture above shows the diagram of this idea. I was taught this by a mentor of mine, but I’ve seen this from other people as well and I’m sure you’ve seen it before as well. But if you haven’t yet, let me explain what it means.


This is probably the most hardest for people to understand because there are some people who doesn’t believe in this. The spirit is in the center because it is the energy and driving force of every human. The Chinese call it “chi”, while people from India call it “chakra”. And for all the Star Wars fans, you call it “the force”. Well whatever you think of this you should know that it is there. It’s the life force that connects everyone in this world. Neglect it, and everything else will fall. The spirit is the foundation to making us whole.


This is a no-brainer (figuratively, not literally). Everyone knows that we need to work on our minds. Wisdom and knowledge is what’s needed in order for us to grow. The way we receive that is through learning and education. I won’t go deep in this here, but I will address how to practice it in my revised diagram.


This is another one I won’t really go too deep in to. Everyone knows they need to work the physical self. That means you should have a proper eating lifestyle and a good workout. I didn’t bother using the words “diet” or “routine” because those are all temporary. If you want to have a better body you need to change to a healthier lifestyle, which starts with better habits (we can discuss habits in a later blog).

Now this diagram is good so people can understand easier. However, the way most people practice this is that they try to work on their spirit first, then their mind, and finally their body. I don’t really see that as realistic. So I made a revised version of the diagram.

I know it’s everything in one circle, but hear me out. I still believe that the spirit is the most important of the three, which is why it’s still in the middle. But everything is connected to one another, leaving the mind and body interchangeable. This means if you want to work your mind more then you have to work your body as well, and vice versa.

Let’s use a heartbreak after a break up for example. Your spirit stays low for awhile, then something from within tell you, “You know what, enough is enough.” What do most people do after a break up? They usually start going to the gym. Then as they go to the gym, their spirit begins to build up again. Later on, they decide to educate themselves by learning new things that they’ve been wanting to do. Next thing you know they begin to change the way they eat, then they become more productive learning new things along the way, all while the fire of their spirit grows bigger and bigger. But this is just an example for you to understand the diagram.

Now you know the three parts that makes a whole you. It’s important to know this so you can evaluate yourself and see which part do you need to work on more.
